President's Message

Happy New Year to everyone, and congratulations to Sharon Anderson, our past president, on the birth of a baby girl (finally, she already has 3 boys!) named Kaia Sylvia Anderson on December 1st. She and her family are doing very well

I can't believe it's already 2006! You have all helped to make 2005 a great year. Your input has been valuable. Did you know that the majority of comments on the Fit and Healthy Vermonters Statewide Obesity Prevention Plan were from RD's? Please continue to speak out. That's how policy is changed.

Have you thought about your plans and goals for the next year? Can you make some room in your busy lives for VDA? Are there new ventures you'd like to see VDA address? Here are some ways to get involved:

  • VDA Legislative Day, February 1st in Montpelier. This is a wonderful way to meet your legislator, inform them about nutrition issues and how RD’s can help. You don’t have to be a seasoned political activist to participate! Contact Joanne Heidkamp at jheidkamp@vtnohunger.org

  • VDA Annual Meeting, May 4 & 5, Killington, VT. Come for a hike or bike or even ski prior to the networking dinner. Please contact Lara Borders, President-elect, at LBorder1@LFSUS.JNJ.com if you have any ideas or would like to help with planning. We hope to see you there!

  • REGIONAL NETWORKING MEETINGS
Karen Dolan and the Nominating Committee have done an awesome job of reviving local networking opportunities. The Executive Board has set aside some monies to “jumpstart” this adventure. Please contact Karen Dolan at kdolan@vtnohunger.org if you would like to start a group in your area.

Please stay in touch via our website www.eatrightvt.org which is constantly evolving, and/or the VDA email Update. If you don’t currently receive the email update, let me know and I’ll add you to the list. If you have anything you would like to share with the membership, please email it to me.

Best wishes for a successful 2006!

ADAF’s Disaster Relief Fund … has awarded $77,850 so far to 48 individuals and their families who were affected by the recent devastating hurricanes, and the review committee is considering 13 new applications. Many ADA members were forced to relocate, lost jobs and are searching for employment or rebuilding their businesses. Several applicants suffered through medical emergencies in addition to evacuation and severe home damage. And a number of members requested help in rebuilding their professional resources. Thanks to all members who have contributed to the Disaster Relief Fund; I encourage everyone to assist your fellow members in helping this fund grow and continue. You may give online by clicking http://www.eatright.org/obc or by returning a pledge form found at http://webdietitians.org/Public/Files/donationcardforappealonline.pdf. Nominating Committee Update

During the past few months the nominating committee has been busy contacting VDA members and creating the 2006 slate of candidates for vacant VDA Executive Board positions. The ballot is being finalized this month and voting will begin in February. This year VDA will take the lead from ADA and use an electronic voting process. For members that do not have access to the internet, a hard copy of the ballot will be mailed to them. We believe that the electronic ballot will make voting easier and more cost effective for members.

In addition to working on the 2006 ballot, the nominating committee has been moving forward with the development of Regional Networking Meetings. We have identified a number of members that would like to serve as Regional Coordinators and we hope to have some of the first Regional Networking Meetings this spring. The meetings will serve as an opportunity for members to network with other nutrition professionals in their area and determine meeting goals as a group. If you would like more information about the meetings or are interested in serving as a Regional Coordinator, please contact us.
